Renewable Business Electricity

As climate change becomes an increasingly prevalent issue, more and more businesses are looking for ways to reduce their carbon footprint. A great way to do this is to switch to renewable business energy. Here at Energy Solutions, we can help you compare energy suppliers so you can find the best sustainable energy deal for your business.

Switch to a green tariff

When deciding which energy provider to go with for your business electricity, it’s important to consider the different tariffs on offer. For example, a fixed-rate tariff where you pay a fixed amount each month regardless of any fluctuations in energy prices. Variable tariffs on the other hand will go up or down depending on what the wholesale price of electricity is.  However, green tariffs are becoming an increasingly popular option, with some suppliers offering it as the standard and therefore pricing it more competitively. Typically, with a green energy tariff, the energy you use is guaranteed to be 100% renewable, making it a great sustainable option. There are also deals such as nuclear-free energy or carbon offset where your carbon emissions are effectively countered by the supplier investing in carbon reduction.  Through choosing this option, you can reduce your carbon footprint and move towards a cleaner, greener future.

Benefits of renewable business energy

There are many advantages to opting for green energy solutions for your business. These benefits include:

Round Shape

Environmental impact

Electricity generated by fossil fuels is a major source of CO₂ emissions, which contributes to global climate change. Renewable energy sources are a greener alternative as they don’t produce greenhouse gases, therefore lowering your carbon footprint. Green energy also produces little to no pollution, contributing to cleaner air and water in your local area.

Round Shape

Stable, predictable costs

Fossil fuel prices tend to be influenced by the global market meaning they can fluctuate a lot in price due to international demand and changes in policy. Renewable energy isn’t impacted by these external factors in the same way and so is typically more stable, making it easier to budget energy costs.

Round Shape

Improved brand reputation

Many consumers now prefer brands that demonstrate environmental and corporate responsibility. Businesses that use renewable energy therefore attract eco-conscious customers and differentiate themselves from competitors. By using renewable energy, you could also appeal more to socially responsible investors (SRIs).

Round Shape

Eligibility for Government incentives

The UK Government is currently committed to reaching net zero emissions by 2050 and as part of this have £5 billion of funding to help UK businesses become greener. By using renewable energy sources, your business could be eligible for schemes like this, and be in line with any ecological regulations the Government may impose.

Frequently asked questions

Below are some of the most common questions about renewable business energy. If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Unlike fossil fuels, renewable energy comes from natural sources that are replenished quicker than they are consumed, meaning they won’t run out. In the UK, there are four main types of renewable energy sources:

  • Wind – wind drives wind turbines which convert that energy into electricity
  • Solar – solar panels absorb sunlight which in turn becomes electricity
  • Hydroelectric – large volumes of falling water drive a turbine which then generates electricity
  • Bioenergy – organic materials or biomass are used as a fuel to power generators.

If your business generates its own electricity, whether that’s through a wind turbine or solar panels, you can choose a supplier that offers the smart export guarantee (SEG). This is a tariff where you get paid for any surplus renewable energy you generate and feed back to the grid. As energy suppliers set their own SEGs, the amount you receive per kWh will vary, depending on their rates and if it’s fixed-rate or variable.

When looking for a renewable energy solution, you may find that green tariffs are a little more expensive. This is because green energy suppliers often have higher operating costs and invest in sustainable projects. However, this can vary depending on how much energy you use and how competitive the prices are. It’s worth comparing different options and considering what is best for your business, both financially and ecologically.

The Office of Gas and Electricity Markets (Ofgem) works to ensure green energy deals are completely transparent, making it much easier to see if a supplier’s energy is 100% renewable or mixed with non-renewable energy. Energy suppliers can prove their energy is renewable through being given Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGO) certificates. Ofgem will issue one REGO certificate for every MWh of energy produced by a renewable source.
