Does my business need to comply with SECR?
Your business is required to report under SECR if it meets two or more of: 250 or more employees, annual turnover of £36 million or more, or a balance sheet total of £18 million or more. Quoted companies of any size are also included. Our compliance team will confirm your status in one conversation, free of charge.
What is the difference between SECR and ESOS?
SECR is an annual reporting requirement, you must include your energy consumption and carbon emissions in your Directors’ Report each year. ESOS is a four-yearly energy audit that identifies cost-effective savings opportunities across your buildings, transport, and industrial processes. Both apply to similar organisations, and Sustain 360 handles both frameworks through one integrated platform.
What are Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions?
Scope 1 emissions are direct emissions from sources your organisation owns or controls. Scope 2 covers indirect emissions from purchased electricity and heat. Scope 3 is the broadest category, covering all other indirect emissions across your value chain, including supply chain purchases, business travel, employee commuting, and product disposal. SECR requires Scope 1 and 2; CSRD and more advanced frameworks also require full Scope 3 disclosure.
What is a Carbon Reduction Plan and do I need one?
A Carbon Reduction Plan (CRP) is a published document demonstrating your commitment to achieving Net Zero by 2050, including your current carbon footprint, reduction targets, and the actions you’re taking. If your business supplies to the public sector under PPN 06/21, a CRP is mandatory for contracts above £5 million. Sustain 360 generates a fully compliant CRP automatically as part of your subscription.
How long does it take to produce a compliant SECR report?
Once your energy and operational data has been uploaded to Sustain 360, the platform generates your SECR report automatically. For most businesses with well-organised data, a draft report is ready within 24–48 hours. After our expert review, the final compliant report is typically delivered within 5–10 working days from onboarding.
What happens if I don't comply with SECR?
Companies that fail to include the required energy and carbon information in their annual reports face enforcement by the Financial Reporting Council’s Conduct Committee. Non-compliance can result in fines, reputational damage, and difficulties with auditors. Businesses supplying the public sector also risk losing contracts if their Carbon Reduction Plan is missing or non-compliant.
