Frequently asked questions

When thinking about introducing EV charging stations to your business, you need to consider several costs – the unit price, the installation fees and the cost of any wider building works that will need to be carried out to accommodate your charging stations. The cost of the hardware can vary depending on how basic or advanced you want to go. Prices are affected by several factors, including charging speed, connection capacity, design and whether or not it offers advanced smart features. As outlined above, there are several grants that you may be able to apply for to bring down the cost of the purchase, installation and infrastructure of your EV charge points. There are a few steps you need to take in order to install commercial EV charging stations at your commercial premises, from figuring out your existing electrical capacity and infrastructure to deciding how many charge points are required, their ideal location, to getting the necessary planning permission. A critical step is selecting a specialist installation partner. When you come to Energy Solutions, we make the process as seamless as possible, from start to finish. You don’t have to worry about being an energy expert; we have all the knowledge and expertise needed to meet your requirements.

It’s true that EV charging stations require an initial outlay but it is possible to reap back the cost of your investment and to potentially make a profit by charging customers to use your stations. It helps if you can avail of a government grant so it’s worth looking into this before you begin. When it comes to charging for electricity, there are a range of pricing models to choose from, including:

  • Time-based – charging per minute
  • Energy-based – charging per unit of electricity used
  • Hybrid – using a mix of time and energy to determine pricing
  • Fixed-rate – charging a flat-rate monthly subscription fee, for example
  • Peak and off-peak – variable pricing based on when the vehicle is charged
  • Type of EV charger – charging more for ultra-quick charging .

Each model has its own pros and cons so it’s important to consider these before you determine the right one for your business.

It’s also important to consider the overall economic benefits that providing EV charging stations can bring to your business. These can take the form of increased footfall, sales and a broader target market. This halo effect can have a significant positive impact on your business.
